• Description:
  The work performed during this contract included the following tasks: (i) the development of a novel numerical model for the dynamic simulation of a rockfall prevention fence using the descrete element method (DEM), (ii) the numerical implementation of the DEM numerical model in a computer code to be used by engineers at CDOT, and (iii) demonstration and validation of the DEM computer technique to simulate rockfall impacts against rockfall fences. The original DEM numerical model was designed to analyze flexible rockfall prevention fences that were comprised of a single layer of columnar attenuators. In an additional research task funded under this contract the DEM model was extended to deal with fences with two layers of attenuators.
