This study evaluated the laboratory feasibility of elastomeric bearing prototypes reinforced with additively manufactured pentamode lattices. Stainless steel lattice configurations were embedded within a cast polyurethane elastomer and evaluated through material characterization and axial and cyclic shear testing. Within the tested range, lattice geometry influenced axial stiffness while producing comparatively smaller changes in shear stiffness. The study was limited to small scale prototypes, a limited number of specimens, shear testing without simultaneous vertical compression, and a prototype elastomer that differs from conventional bridge bearing materials. The results establish proof of concept but do not demonstrate suitability for implementation on MassDOT bridge structures. Additional full scale combined loading, fatigue, durability, environmental, modeling, and economic studies are required.
