Alternative Title:
Assessing the Effectiveness of Blue Lights on Work Zone Safety
This project investigated the effectiveness of blue lights in work zones following the enactment of Mississippi's "Blue Light Law". The methodology combined a systematic literature review, a nationwide survey, and field data analysis. The literature review indicated a lack of standardized guidance. The survey findings showed that practitioners perceived blue lights as effective in improving alertness. The field data analysis suggested that blue lights were associated with changes in driver behavior, including shifts away from the lane closest to the construction and more consistent nighttime speed reductions. Overall, blue lights may function as a visual signal that supports safer driving behavior, especially at night. This highlighted the need for further evaluation and development of standardized deployment strategies in work zones.
