Abstract:Hot-mix asphalt is a viscoelastic material with properties that depend heavily on temperature and loading frequency. Consequently, precise pavement temperature monitoring is critical for accurate pavement analysis, modulus backcalculation, and prediction of critical pavement responses. Recent Illinois Center for Transportation and Illinois Department of Transportation projects analyzed traffic speed deflectometer (TSD) data across Illinois highways. Unlike traditional falling weight deflectometer measurements, TSD testing occurs at traffic speeds, preventing the collection of multiple temperature readings. To overcome this limitation, a more robust method is required to approximate internal pavement temperatures based on surface conditions. In this project, the research team created and piloted a laboratory prototype device using an instrumented field core embedded with temperature sensors. A MATLAB tool was developed to support future data input, validate measurements against existing models, and develop new models. The new prototype will be deployed at the Illinois Certification and Research Track (ICART) alongside a weather station to gather continuous temperature data. The report also presents a framework for using the prototype and future ICART data to validate TSD data in a future project.
