Abstract:This research evaluated the Missouri Department of Transportation's (MoDOT's) use of Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies in work zones, with an emphasis on Smart Work Zone (SWZ) technologies and automation. Project objectives included identifying available TSMO strategies, documenting examples of their use, implementing selected strategies in an active Missouri work zone, evaluating their effectiveness, and developing recommendations for future projects. The work included a review of current practices and literature to assess MoDOT's work zone management, TSMO, and SWZ processes. Based on this review, selected strategies were recommended and implemented on a MoDOT construction project. Safety and operational evaluations were conducted using daily monitoring, performance data collection, and post-project analysis. An economic evaluation assessed the costs of the deployed strategies. The project concluded with recommendations for SWZ Job Special Provisions and a refined list of TSMO strategies, documenting effective best practices, and guidance for integrating advanced work zone strategies into MoDOT's standard practices.
