A series of aircraft engine tests were conducted on a dynamometer which compared the vapor lock tendency of selected automobile gasolines against aviation gasoline. The effects of fuel temperature, toe technique for heating the fuel used in vapor lock studies, the engine cooling air temperature the fuel level in the tanks, and fuel system configuration were investigated. The tendency for automobile gasoline to detonate in an aircraft engine was investigated, and the results show a strong correlation with the Motor Octane Number.
