Abstract:The objective of this work was to develop a robust pedestrian data (PEDAT) platform-built upon high-resolution traffic signal data and research relating push-button data to pedestrian volumes-that can be used to monitor pedestrian activity and provide pedestrian data for a variety of tasks in planning, design, operations, and management. Following a series of three stakeholder meetings and an iterative design process, the research team started with an existing prototype and created an entirely new and more functional PEDAT Version 1. The online dashboard allows users to select multiple signal locations, filtered by date, and view figures, maps, and tables that summarize and visualize the estimated pedestrian volumes in various ways. The data, charts, and a PDF report can be downloaded. One limitation is that the data for PEDAT Version 1 had to be manually processed by the research team. Therefore, to implement this research, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and its contractors integrated PEDAT into their Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) system, relying on automatically aggregated and archived signal data housed in a cloud computing database. The latest version of PEDAT is the "Pedestrian Activity" feature in UDOT's ATSPM Version 5.2, and it has been operating online with data since January 2026. As a result of this project, anyone can extract estimated pedestrian volumes at nearly 2,000 signals throughout Utah, thus aiding important efforts in pedestrian transportation planning, design, and operations.
