Abstract:The general safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs) has been shown by some researchers to decrease in the vicinity of transit stops. Previous studies have shown correlations between pedestrian-vehicle crashes and pedestrian generators, specifically transit stops. Furthermore, previous researchers have identified a discrepancy between declining crash frequencies and rising VRU crash frequencies, a trend that helped catalyze the Vision-Zero initiative. Building on previous research that established a spatial correlation between transit locations and pedestrian-involved crashes, this study evaluates the impact of the transit system in Utah on road safety and operational efficiency. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate, understand, and quantify the interaction of the transit system in the state of Utah as a function of traffic safety, specifically as it relates to VRUs. Geospatial tools, specifically within ArcGIS Pro software, were employed to locate transit stops and analyze surrounding crashes across the state. Crashes were further analyzed using statistical modeling to determine VRU crash probabilities while accounting for surrounding land use (land use classification and intersection involvement), transit stop characteristics (stop location, stop relation to intersection, and transit stop volume), and roadway characteristics (speed limit and roadway volume) variables. This report uses a quantified relationship between transit and VRUs to offer evidence-based recommendations for improving the relationship between public transportation and the physical safety of VRUs in Utah.
