Abstract:Rapid, significant changes in the transportation environment resulting from accommodation of vastly accelerated technological advances and economic deregulation have brought about concern that the new environment created by these changes might result in a reduction in industry safety. A safety review was directed by the Secretary of Transportation, to encompass all modes within the Department to determine if safety concerns were valid and to ensure that safety would not be compromised. In order to accomplish this review, the Secretary established the Safety Review Task Force to analyze the status of safety programs in the Department of Transportation. This report reflects the results of the efforts of that Task Force with respect to a review of the Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Standards Safety Program.
