Abstract:Previous work in cabin fire safety - reference E&D program plan FAA-ED-18-7 dated June 1980 (revised 1983) - has made considerable inroads into the post-crash fire problem and several areas related to in-flight safety. As a result of this work, notices of proposed rulemaking were issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on flammability requirements for aircraft seat cushions, and floor proximity emergency escape path marking. Also, technical standard order TSO-C69A was issued to improve fire resistance of evacuation slides and a new advisory circular AC2042B on hand-held extinguishers was issued containing information for the safe use of Halon 1211. Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM's) are planned in the near future on fire protection requirements for cargo compartments, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors for lavatories, and improved test methods and criteria for cabin interior materials.
