Abstract:This edition of Traffic Safety Facts briefly summarizes traffic-related crashes, fatalities, injuries and other data from 2024 that are all speeding-related. Key Findings: 28 percent of fatal crashes, 13 percent of injury crashes, and 8 percent of property-damage-only crashes were speeding-related; 11,288 fatalities were in speeding-related crashes (29% of total fatalities, down 5% from 2023); an estimated 316,757 people were injured (13% of total people injured); 39 percent of male drivers and 20 percent of female drivers in the 15-to-20 age group in fatal crashes were speeding, highest among all age groups; speeding drivers in fatal crashes had BACs of .08 g/dL or greater (37%)—or even higher BACs of .15 g/dL or greater (25%)—than non-speeding drivers; 37 percent of motorcycle riders in fatal crashes were speeding, more than drivers of any other vehicle type; and 50% of speeding passenger vehicles drivers killed were unrestrained, compared to 21 percent of non-speeding passenger vehicle drivers.
