Abstract:

This report contains the quantitative results of an air traffic computer capacity study performed at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center for 19 of the 20 en route centers in the National Airspace System (due to a manpower shortage, Chicago did not participate in this survey). Based on field data consisting of several thousand observations collected during a1r traffic operations, the study is an extension of a task started 2 years ago during a Senate investigation. Over a period of time, such work has become part of the FAA's continuous effort to monitor the dwindling capacity of the en route computers until a replacement is available. The analysis addresses central processing as well as selector channel utilization for the current A3d2.12 software system. Several comparisons are made with the older A3d2.9 and 2.10 systems measured in the past. The sites with the fast IBM 90200 computers continued to have ample processing capacity, while those with the slower 9020A systems had their high utilization noticeably reduced through recent improvements. Despite this change, the 9020A processing utilizations rema1n quite high relative to those of the 90200.
