Abstract:NHTSA recently issued a projection report of traffic fatalities and the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for 2025. That report shows an estimated 36,640 people died in traffic crashes in 2025, a decrease of about 6.7 percent compared to 2024. The estimated fatality rate for 2025 is 1.10 fatalities per 100 million VMT, down from 1.19 fatalities per 100 million VMT in 2024. Key findings: There are decreases across almost all sub-categories: on urban interstate (↓ 10%); urban and arterial (↓ 12%); at night (↓ 8%); during weekends (↓ 7%); during out-of-State travel (↓ 11%); in newer (vehicle age <10 years) passenger vehicles (↓ 12%); in passenger vehicle rollover crashes (↓ 11%); ejected (↓ 13%); in single-vehicle crashes (↓ 7%); in roadway departure crashes (↓ 9%); in speeding-related crashes (↓ 11%); in the 65-and-older age group (↓ 0%); males (↓ 6%) and females (↓ 7%); unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants (↓ 13%); drivers (↓ 5%) and passengers (↓ 12%); passenger vehicle occupants (↓ 10%); motorcyclists (↓ 8%); pedestrians (↓ 8%); pedalcyclists (↑ 4%); in crashes each involving at least one large truck (↓ 7%); and nonoccupant (↓ 5%).
