Abstract:This issue of Traffic Safety Facts describes the most current data on young driver fatalities in motor vehicle crashes from 2024. Key findings: In 2024 there were 2,162 young drivers who died in traffic crashes, a slight increase from 2,156 in 2023, and traffic fatalities in crashes involving young drivers increased by 7 percent; the number of licensed young drivers increased by 2.6 percent from 2023; young drivers accounted for 9 percent of all drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes although they were only 5.2 percent of all licensed drivers; of the young drivers killed with known restraint use 53 percent were unrestrained; of young drivers killed in traffic crashes who had blood alcohol concentrations, 25 percent had BACs of .08 g/dL or higher; 583 motorcycle riders 15 to 20 years old were killed in traffic crashes and an estimated 10,113 in that age group were injured.
