Abstract:

It is vital to the success of the Mode S beacon system and the numerous data link services which utilize the Mode S beacon channel, that link operation be characterized including a determination of the parameters limiting link operation. Utilization of the RF beacon channel is dependent on target densities and repeated interrogation rates. With a given target density, the channel may become overloaded if each target requires repeated interrogations to obtain a valid reply.
