Abstract:Industry's demand for aircraft icing test facilities has reached a point where a coordinated effort is necessary to establish a national level program for both improving existing facilities and developing new icing test facilities. In January of 1980, the cognizant government agencies, FAA, NASA and DOD, initiated this effort during the first National Icing Facilities Coordination Meeting. The main theme for the current symposium emphasizes establishment of an industry consensus on the requirements for National Icing Facilities not only for certification, but for research and development purposes as well. This consensus must satisfy both present icing test facilities requirements and the needs foreseen for the future. These facilities are required to facilitate more timely and less costly icing research and icing certification.
