Abstract:One of the most important time-critical air traffic control messages for a pilot is one
that required an immediate maneuver for traffic avoidance. This study examines the time
required for an air traffic controller to successfully transmit such a message in the en
route environment as measured from the beginning of the controller's message to the end
of the pilot's correct acknowledgement. This total time is broken down into its
component parts: the duration of the controller's message, the time between the end of
the controller's message and the beginning of the pilot's response, and the duration of
the pilot's acknowledgement. For comparison purposes, transmissions relaying clearances
for turns for reasons other than traffic and traffic advisories were also examined.
