Abstract:The use of ground speed in combination with air speed has been considered and shown to be an effective aid in the execution of an approach and landing in a heavy jet transport airplane. A flight dynamics analysis shows that the response of such aircraft to sudden changes in headwind is quite sluggish, requiring more than 100 seconds for equilibrium conditions to be regained in the worst case.
