Abstract:

This study examines commercial motor vehicle (CMV) crash severity in Idaho state from 2014–2023 by linking several state and federal databases to create an integrated analysis dataset. After filtering for completeness, 13,701 CMV-involved crashes were modeled using binary logistic regression to estimate the association between temporal, roadway, environmental, work-zone, vehicle, and driver factors and the odds of high-severity outcomes. Key findings include elevated fatal-crash odds in specific weather, during time of day, in certain roadway conditions, and in particular lighting conditions. The study translates these results into actionable mitigation strategies for Idaho, including infrastructure changes, technologies, public campaigns, and educational efforts. A dedicated section outlines a continuous data quality framework to support ongoing evaluation.
