Abstract:The objective of this research project is to identify the most efficient compaction procedure for AASHTO #1, #57, and #8 aggregates by varying equipment type (both heavy and lightweight), moisture content, lift thickness, roller speed/operation duration, and number of passes needed to meet the non-movement condition through a literature review, survey of Department of Transportations and Contractors, and a field compaction test program. Five pieces of compaction equipment, four lift thicknesses, and two moisture conditions were used in the field compaction tests. Based on the results of this research, the recommended lift thickness, roller speed/operation duration, number of passes, and moisture condition for the aggregate types and equipment types tested to meet the non-movement criteria consistently are presented in a matrix format.
