Abstract:An event data recorder records vehicle data just prior or during a crash (braking, air bag status and deployment, seat belt usage, etc., and then crash events), intended for retrieval after the crash to help crash reconstruction or vehicle safety research. NHTSA established CDR requirements in 49 C.F.R. § 563 in 2012. Since then, crash avoidance and advanced driver assistance systems have expanded in the market. This study examines data elements recorded beyond what is required by § 563 since it went into effect. A query on 2022-2023 Crash Investigation Sampling System case year data was conducted, then model year 2022-2024 vehicles were chosen that had that information available for analysis. Fifteen vehicle manufacturers met these criteria and were eligible for review. Data elements were also identified that were not incorporated in existing regulations or best practices and were unique to each manufacturer. All 15 were reporting all § 563 Table I data elements, but reporting § 563 Table II elements varied across OEMs. Large variation in the number of data elements beyond § 563 reported ranged from 9 to 405 additional elements. Some were reporting data elements from UN R160 and SAE J1698, but there were differences across OEMs for each element.
