Abstract:NHTSA recently issued a projection report of traffic fatalities and the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for the first half of 2025 (Report No. DOT HS 813 756) that showed an estimated 17,140 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes during the first half of 2025, a decrease of about 8.2 percent as compared to 18,680 fatalities projected to have occurred in the first half of 2024. The estimated fatality rate for the first half of 2025 is 1.06 fatalities per 100 million VMT, down from the projected rate of 1.16 fatalities per 100 million VMT in the first half of 2024.
