Abstract:This report contains a literature review of articles and books pertaining to the design and impact of channel modifications on the riverine system. Principal components in understanding such impacts are the geomorphology of the stream system, the impact of bridge and culvert structures on streamflow characteristics, and the relation of the stream system and changes in it on riparian ecology. Any change in a stream impacts the equilibrium of the stream. These impacts can result in a decrease or increase in base level which can be propagated in both the upstream and downstream directions with serious impacts on the stream and other structures crossing the stream. A design method which considers this possibility was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, based on research by David Rosgen and others. The approach is based on understanding which components of stream dynamics are in equilibrium and constructing designs that maintain stream equilibrium.
