Abstract:Accurately predicting bat use of bridges is an important need for planning of bridge repair and maintenance. However, less than 1% of bridges in Ohio have been surveyed for bats, limiting the inferences that can be drawn from existing data and modelling tools. We developed a method for passive camera surveys of bat use of bridges and reevaluated ODOT’s existing tools for predicting bat use of bridges. We were able to create a model that predicts the likelihood that a bridge will be used by bats as roosting habitat. Currently, the data feeding into the model has few positive detections, thus resulting in a model that performs well when determining bridges without bats but leaves room for improvement on determining bridges with bats. With future bridge surveys, the model will improve, and the usability of the likelihood predictions will be able to be implemented to aid in bridge management.
