Abstract:Phase III of Research Project 0-1860 was initiated with the primary objective of evaluating the feasibility of using SOVIT technology for slope stabilization purposes. Accordingly, two sites in the Dallas metropolitan area were selected and limited scale, trial vitrification projects performed at each site. These trial projects demonstrated the viability of using SOVIT technology for slope stabilization purposes. At the same time, however, the experience from the trial projects showed that several modifications to the current portable SOVIT system were necessary before it could be used in a full-scale slope stabilization project. These modifications include: (a) providing the arc melter head and the CGAM electrodes with independent mobility so that electrodes can be easily aligned over a pre-drilled borehole, (b) attaching a hand held gasoline powered auger to the arc melter frame, and (c) re-design of the Power Conditioning System (PCU) to make it more suitable for extreme temperature conditions found in the field. The modification of the PCU was also completed as a part of Phase III research effort.
