• Abstract:
  Our purpose here is to honor unusual people in the Department of Transportation - men and women who are demanding of themselves and are impatient with mediocrity- men and women who are comfortable only with excellence. We also pay tribute to men who have demonstrated uncommon courage, and this is the best that can he said of any man. These uncommon friends of ours serve their government and the American people well. They add to their work that extra ingredient which only the talented or the dedicated can supply, and this mark of excellence, the contribution of the one, so often brings success to the efforts of the many. They also inspire those around them. We humans, finding ourselves in the presence of our betters, discover ourselves instinctively imitating them. Whether or not they ask to lead, we seek to follow. It is only fitting, consequently, that we pause, and in this Annual Awards Ceremony, honor these men and women. They well deserve, from all of us, our gratitude and tribute.
