Abstract:Transitways are defined as exclusive, physically separated, access controlled high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) priority treatment facilities which are typically located within existing freeway right(s)-of-way. Transitways are sometimes referred to as busways, HOV lanes or AVLs (authorized vehicle lanes). This report was prepared for the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) to provide guidelines and standards for the planning, design, and operation of transitway facilities. It follows the general style and format of the SDHPT Operations and Procedures Manual. This transitway manual has been prepared as an independent document to replace existing SDHPT information on the design of high-occupancy vehicle facilities. The Manual is divided into two primary technical divisions. These are: (1) Transitway main lanes and connections; and (2) Transitway support facilities. Information presented within the transitway manual should promote uniformity of design and operational efficiency for transitway facilities in Texas.
