Abstract:This report presents the findings of a study conducted by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to evaluate advanced volumetric measurement technologies for accurately assessing road salt piles. The motivation for this study stems from the limitations of traditional methods, such as visual estimation and truckload weighing, which are prone to significant inaccuracies and inefficiencies. The study explored three primary technologies: photogrammetry, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and depth cameras. These technologies were tested across multiple UDOT salt storage facilities, including Murray, Draper, Salt Lake East, Kamas, Tooele, Salina, and Mt. Pleasant. The primary objective was to determine which method provides the most accurate and reliable measurements for managing salt inventories.
