Abstract:The concept of exclusive high-occupancy vehicle priority treatment facilities (transitways) has been strongly endorsed by the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT). There currently exists no unified set of accepted standards for the design of transitway facilities. The overall objective of this study is to develop a Texas manual of design guidelines for transitway facilities based upon a review of standards and operation of existing and proposed projects nationwide and in Texas. This report presents the details and summary of this information to be assessed subsequently for technical adequacy and applicability in Texas. Recommendations for the Transitway Design Manual will be forthcoming to be considered by both SDHPT and transit authority officials.
