• Abstract:
  Monitoring freeway traffic conditions in construction zones is difficult. A 17.7 kilometer (11 mile) section of U.S. 59 (Eastex) Freeway from I-610 North Loop to Beltway 8 North in Houston, Texas is under construction and was chosen for this demonstration project. The selected sensor technologies were the Doppler Radar and side-fire microwave ranging. Wooden utility poles installed near the freeway lanes provided sensor placements. Mobility of the sensor is paramount. At report time, the equipment had been purchased, an electrical contractor chosen, and equipment was being installed.
