Abstract:A methodology is developed for relating cost to ride quality in elevated guideway
system design, based upon directly relating guideway structural properties and
construction tolerances to both cost and ride quality. It is illustrated in detail
for group-rapid-transit precast concrete elevated guideway systems. These deta iled
cost-ride quality studies include an assessment of span properties, construct ionrelated
tolerances such as joint discontinuities, pier height variations, camber,
and local surface roughness, and the effect of vehicle properties on cost and vehicle
ride quality .
