Abstract:The characteristics of mineral filler materials have been investigated to determine their potential in upgrading the performance of asphaltic concrete, especially by increasing hot-mix stability and durability to alleviate problems with rutting and shoving. Three phases of testing were conducted. These included (I) testing of mineral fillers alone, (2) testing asphalt cements, and (3) testing of mastics composed of mineral filler and asphalt cements. Both the testing of the fillers alone and testing of the asphalt cement-mineral filler mastics revealed significant differences among the different fillers and filler blends. These differences are believed to portend important differences among hot mixes constructed using the different mineral filler types. Based on previous research and the limited work done in this sub-study, the use of certain mineral fillers offers enhanced opportunity for increased stiffness and strength in asphalt concrete.
