Abstract:Conventional high-speed inertial profilers provide valid international roughness index (IRI) measurements under favorable conditions but experience performance degradation at low speeds, during deceleration and acceleration, or when coming to a stop. Due to these limitations, Louisiana DOTD does not compute performance index (PI) values for certain highway sections, including ramps, acceleration lanes, and deceleration lanes, as conventional profilers fail to capture reliable IRI data under these conditions. The industry has recently introduced a Stop-and-Go (SAG) inertial profiler, designed to measure IRI across various operational conditions. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of a SAG inertial profiler under various driving conditions on Louisiana roads and propose a method for measuring and characterizing IRI and PI values for ramps, acceleration lanes, and deceleration lanes to complement existing DOTD guidelines. The SAG inertial profiler was first compared with conventional high-speed inertial profilers under constant high-speed operation.
