This Part 1 (Research Report 113-2) is a progress report on one phase of the general project "Splices and Anchorage of Reinforcing Bars". It covers an investigation of 11 bar splices under a condition which models the necessary splices at the base of the stem of a cantilever retaining wall. While an extension of the present work will continue into 1969-1970, the present findings call for quite substantial changes from the present AASHO specifications for such splices. From the standpoint of safety, it is not desirable to withhold the present findings for these later tests.
