Abstract:The behavior of a laterally loaded drilled shaft in clay has been investigated by conducting a second lateral load test on an instrumented shaft. For each increment of the applied lateral load, the shaft rotation, the soil resistance, and the lateral deflection were measured. Pneumatic pressure cells were used to measure the soil resistance along the shaft. Dial gages located at the top of the shaft were used to measure the lateral deflection, and an inclinometer was used to measure the rotation of the shaft. The lateral load was measured with a strain gaged load cell. The ultimate lateral load for this test was defined as the load where the amount of lateral movement which occurred was enough to develop the limiting soil resistance. Using this definition for ultimate lateral load, it was possible to compare the ultimate soil reaction predicted by several analytical procedures with the soil reaction calculated from the soil resistance measured at the ultimate lateral load. Also, the ultimate lateral load for the test shaft was predicted using various analytical methods, and a comparison was made between the predicted ultimate loads and the measured ultimate load. Finally, a comparison was made between the measured ultimate loads obtained from six other load tests reported in the technical literature and the ultimate loads predicted by the different analytical methods. Based upon the comparison of measured versus predicted ultimate loads a preliminary design procedure for the design of rigid laterally loaded drilled shafts is presented. However, additional load tests are needed before this preliminary design procedure can be finalized.
