Abstract:In recent years, problems associated with retaining retroreflective raised pavement markers (RPMs) on Texas highways have to a large extent been successfully resolved. Problems with the maintenance of acceptable levels of RPM reflectivity, on the other hand, have remained persistent. This report summarizes a variety of activities, including determination of minimum effective retroreflector performance in terms of visual detection thresholds, field and laboratory studies of the durability of RPM reflectivity, and research and testing associated with the development of a field measurement device, that address the RPM reflectivity and visibility issue.
