Abstract:The repair of pavement edge geometry adjacent to unpaved shoulders is a maintenance activity that requires continuous effort on the part of all state and local agencies. Although it is generally accepted that these roadway discontinuities have some effect on vehicle stability and thus on facility safety, these effects have never been comprehensively quantified. Using research conducted previously by CALTRANS and Systems Technology, Inc., and adding a testing program to supplement and extend the earlier work, a comprehensive treatment of this problem has been developed and is presented here. Recommendations are made for the use of this information to establish maintenance guidelines.
