Abstract:This report is intended to document the empirical equation for predicting pavement performance that was given in Section 3.3 of Research Report 32-11, "A Systems Approach to the Flexible Pavement Design Problem". The equation explains loss in serviceability in terms of deflections, axle applications, temperature, and foundation movements due to swelling clays. This report is limited to a discussion of how the equation was developed. How it is used to solve practical problems of design is described briefly in a summary report, "The Design of Flexible Pavements (A Systems Approach)", and in detail in Research Report 32-11 (1).
