Abstract:This report describes a feasibility study which has led to the development of a "first generation" instrument system for measuring transient pavement deflections. Accelerometers embedded in the pavement structure are employed to sense the basic motion. Dual analog integration is utilized to obtain and record output indications proportional to displacement. The circuit characteristics are such that transient vertical movements as small as 0.002 inch, or horizontal movements as small as 0.0005 inch, occurring within less than two seconds can be recorded.
