Abstract:For years, Route 611 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania had multiple severe crashes, especially on curves. That changed in 2007 when the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) tried a new technology called high friction surface treatment (HFST). It was a new aggregate, calcined bauxite, applied over an epoxy base poured and spread on existing pavement. The aggregate was supposed to give drivers more friction on the pavement to prevent skidding.
