Texas population has been growing rapidly since the past decade. To plan for future transportation needs, officials in transportation planning have to know the size of the future population. This study presents population projections for the state and for the twenty-five State Department of Highway and Public Transportation districts between 1985 and 2005 at every five-year interval, using existing projections prepared by various agencies. Three sets of population projections were made at both the state and the district levels: high, medium, and low. By the year 2005, the medium forecast predicts that the Texas population will grow to 23.6 million. The composition of the Texas population by age, by sex, and by race was briefly examined. According to the transportation needs, the age of the population was divided into three groups: the young (age 0-15), the driving age (age 16-74), and the old (age 75+).
