Abstract:The majority of previous land use impact studies have been devoted to investigating the effects that new highway construction has on land use change and development. In view of the new emphasis placed upon upgrading and redesigning existing facilities rather than building new ones, highway planners need information relative to the influence that existing facility improvement has on area land uses. This report relates the findings of such an improvement, which occurred in Houston, Texas when Section One of Westheimer Road (F.M. 1093) between Chimney Rock and Hillcroft-Voss was upgraded from a two-lane rural type road to a six-lane divided thoroughfare. Prior to the improvement, the study area was described as a developing area in which the predominant land use was unimproved.
