Abstract:Studies of urban traffic operations were conducted on the freeways of Texas to determine the design and effectiveness of traffic control systems and surveillance techniques. The control systems were designed to relieve peak period congestion. Surveillance techniques were studied for application in detecting disabled vehicles and their impact on the operation and safety of freeways. This study used demonstration installations and field testing under laboratory conditions to determine the implementation requirements as well as to evaluate the operational theory.
