Abstract:This report presents a preliminary study of changes over time in internal person trips per person and internal auto-driver trips per person for urban areas within Texas. Trip generation rates apparently have been increasing as a result of a greater propensity to travel and changes in socioeconomic characteristics. The rate of increase varies among the individual urban areas, being dependent on certain characteristics of the urban area. The historical rates of increase in internal person trips and auto-driver trips per person are identified using macroscopic measures. Although the rate of increase in trip generation rates is expected to decrease in future years, total trip generation is expected to increase unless the degree of mobility provided by urban street networks is significantly decreased and/or the upward trend in socioeconomic characteristics is arrested or reversed.
