Abstract:This paper reports physical effects of chemical admixtures on concrete and cement mortars, compares the variability of mortar tests with the variations encountered in concrete tests, and shows the degree of correlation of these tests with tests on concrete. The data presented provide a basis for utilizing a standard mortar for quality control tests of chemical admixtures. Most of the work is concentrated on compressive strength, shrinkage, and time of set. Also included are the results of durability tests on admixture concrete and a section on the control of chemical admixture uniformity. A theoretical solution for restrained shrinkage crack spacing is developed and a comparison of this theory with limited test data is shown.
