The broad objective of the research described in this report is to establish whether the resistance to penetration predicted by any of the commonly used pile driving formulas agrees with that found by the wave equation, and if so, to determine which piles, driving hammers, and soil resistances provide agreement. The use of the wave equation to determine the range of accuracy for various pile driving formulas would enable them to be used with far greater confidence than is presently the case.
