Abstract:This report concerns itself with the latter objective of estimating static load hearing capacity of piling. This paper describes how the wave equation can be used to estimate the soil resistance acting on a pile at the time of driving. Knowing the soil resistance on the pile at the time of driving, one can then estimate the load bearing capacity by considering the time effect or soil "set-up" which tends to increase the pile bearing capacity. This report compares the wave equation predictions with full-scale pile load tests results which were conducted by the Texas Highway Department, United States Corps of Engineers, and the Michigan Highway Department.
