Abstract:Peak-period control of urban freeways is receiving increasing attention as a possible means of reducing congestion on these facilities. Control on freeway entrance ramps during the morning peak periods consists of routine procedures on the Gulf Freeway Surveillance and Control Research Project in Houston as well as at other locations in the country. The Houston Research Project is conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute and sponsored by the Texas Highway Department and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. There are several approaches to the philosophy of freeway controls and this paper presents one of them.
