Abstract:The environmental risks associated with the use of seven herbicides and three insecticides comprising a portion of the Texas Department of Transportation's roadside pest management program were assessed. The materials were classified as EPA Category 3 or 4, signifying minimal toxicity. Although the chemicals used may pose a threat to environmental components in some situations, the manner in which they are used combined with the small roadside area treated mitigates the effects and treatment such that the risk is insignificant. This document contains recommendations including guidelines and mitigation measures for mechanical, chemical, cultural, and biological methods for TxDOT's use in developing an integrated pest management program.
