Abstract:This report presents the results of the condition survey and safety analysis of Howes Dams near Howes Corner, South Dakota. The condition survey showed that erosion, especially on the East Dam, has caused damage to the abutment areas and the slope below the berm on the downstream side. Evidence of seepage was also noted on the downstream slope of the East Dam. No spillways are provided on either darn, and the West Darn has nearly overtopped on two occasions in the past. The darns have undergone lateral deformations at the downstream berms of between one and two inches; however, it appears that the movements can be related to fluctuations in the reservoir levels and the water levels within the embankments.
